The Harrietville to Hotham climb is definitely one of the most difficult of the 7 Peaks and you’ll be working hard from the start of the 30km journey. It’s important to find a comfortable cadence early to ensure that you don’t use all of your energy coming out of Harrietville. The middle section does back off a bit, which is a great chance to find your tempo and fuel up with some food and drink, as you’ll need it for the last section of the climb. The ascent from the ticket box to the village sees some really steep leg sapping ramped turns so a nice small gear is essential for this climb. I would recommend a 34/27 compact chain ring, particularly if you like to ride with a higher cadence. I also often ride with a 39/27 tooth combination in races with similar gradients.
